Sidney Island

Where sandy shores meet quiet forest—just beyond the mainland

🏝️ Sidney Island

A coastal gem of soft sand beaches, forested trails, and quiet waters—just minutes from the mainland, but a world away.

Sidney Island lies just off the Saanich Peninsula and offers the rare combination of gorgeous sandy beaches, old-growth forest, and marine wildlife—all without the crowds. It’s the perfect first stop (or final retreat) on a custom boat tour through the Gulf Islands.

🧭 Arriving by Boat

Approaching Sidney Island from the water offers a sense of calm and anticipation. The long, crescent-shaped beach comes into view as forested ridges rise gently behind. There’s no ferry here—just nature, quiet, and a warm welcome from the shore.

As you cruise along the coast, you may spot:

  • Bald eagles perched in shoreline fir trees

  • Seals sunning themselves on the rocks

  • Blue herons wading along the shallows

  • The occasional pod of orcas gliding past Sidney Spit

The soft landing at Sidney Spit makes this one of the most inviting beach entries in the Southern Gulf Islands.

🌿 What to See & Do

Sidney Island is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, which protects much of its shoreline, wetlands, and forest. It’s a favorite for both nature lovers and families looking to explore at a relaxed pace.

Hiking & Walking
Easy trails loop through forest and marshland, with interpretive signs and birdwatching platforms along the way. The Sidney Spit trail offers coastal views and a peaceful walk through dunes and grassy fields.

Beachcombing & Swimming
Sidney Spit features one of the longest and sandiest beaches in the entire region. At low tide, vast sand flats stretch into the sea—ideal for picnics, wading, or simply lying in the sun.

Wildlife Viewing
Spring and fall bring migrating shorebirds by the thousands, while summer is rich with local marine life. It’s one of the best places near Vancouver Island to view nature up close without venturing far.

Picnicking & Relaxation
Shaded picnic areas and driftwood-lined beaches offer perfect spots for lunch or a mid-day break. Bring a towel, a snack, and let time slow down.

🏺 History & Heritage

Sidney Island is located within the traditional territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) First Nations, who have long relied on the island’s rich coastal resources. Shell middens found around the island point to thousands of years of Indigenous use and settlement.

In the early 20th century, the island was also briefly home to a brick-making operation, remnants of which still exist near the southern end. Today, it is preserved largely as a natural sanctuary—valued for both its beauty and its heritage.

🌅 A Perfect Escape Close to Shore

Whether you’re wading through warm tidal flats, walking forested trails, or watching eagles soar overhead, Sidney Island is a peaceful, easy-to-love destination that feels far removed from the bustle of the mainland—yet is only minutes away by boat
