Hiking Adventures
Portland Island boasts an impressive network of over 10 kilometers of marked hiking trails catering to various fitness levels. Popular trails include:

- Portland Island Loop Trail (Princess Margaret Perimeter Trail): A moderately challenging 6.5 to 7.2-kilometer circuit circumnavigating the island, offering enchanting forests, dramatic cliff edges with breathtaking views of the Salish Sea, and secluded coves.

Sturdy footwear is recommended. You’ll encounter arbutus trees, mossy forest floors, and sun-dappled beaches.
Backcountry Camping Under the Stars
Immerse yourself in nature with Portland Island’s authentic backcountry camping. Three designated areas exist: Princess Bay, Shell Beach, and Royal Cove. These are rustic sites with pit toilets. No potable water is available – campers must bring their own supply. Camping is first-come, first-served.
Wildlife Encounters
Portland Island is a sanctuary. You might see black-tailed deer, mink, or raccoons (store food securely!). The waters and skies teem with birdlife, including bald eagles and ospreys. Seals and sea lions are often spotted.
Know Before You Go: Portland Island Rules & Essentials
To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit while protecting the island’s natural beauty, please adhere to the following Parks Canada regulations and guidelines:

- Accessibility: Portland Island is accessible only by boat. Our water taxi service provides convenient transport from Sidney.

- Camping Regulations:

- Permit holders must be 19 years of age or older.

- Backcountry campgrounds are accessible year-round. However, they are not regularly maintained from October 1st to May 14th. During this off-season, services are reduced, and no fees are charged. Visitors use them at their own risk.

- Use designated campsites only. Camping on dunes or vegetation is prohibited.

- Camping Regulations:

- Fire Ban: ABSOLUTELY NO CAMPFIRES are permitted on Portland Island at any time. This includes below the high tide line. Please use appropriate portable cooking stoves.

- Water: There is NO POTABLE WATER on the island. You must bring all the water you will need for drinking, cooking, and hygiene.

- Waste Management: Pack It In, Pack It Out. There are no garbage facilities. You are responsible for removing all your trash from the island.

- Pets: Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash (max 3 meters) at all times to protect wildlife, sensitive vegetation, and other visitors. Please pick up after your pet.

- Wildlife Protection: It is illegal and harmful to entice, approach, feed, disturb, possess, or remove any wildlife (animals or plants) from the park. Observe all wildlife from a respectful distance. Store food securely to avoid attracting animals.

- Leave No Trace: Practice Leave No Trace principles. Stay on marked trails, minimize your impact, and leave the island as you found it, or better.

- Safety: Be prepared for changing coastal weather conditions and rugged terrain. Inform someone of your hiking and camping plans. Cell phone service can be unreliable.

- Boating: Comply with Small Vessel Regulations. Be aware of protected marine zones.
